Feed Your Curiosity: Philly Culture & Science Events, August 13 to 19

Written by Sophie McHugh

Philadelphia is an underrated hotbed for art, science, and culture. Home to an array of venues, museums and institutions, there’s really no good excuse to be bored in this city.

Feed Your Curiosity is a weekly roundup of events in Philadelphia that will broaden your horizons, tantalize your mind, and hopefully sophisticate you into something more than the heathen that you are. Here’s what’s going on this week.

Monday, 8.13

Cut Throat Freak Show

PhilaMOCA

$15

You wanna see something weird? Take a stroll through Fishtown. You wanna see something jaw-droppingly insane? Show up at PhilaMOCA at 8 pm for the ultimate collection of Freak Show acts and stunts guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. Where else can you see rubber bands to the face, green skin, human turkey calls, and things on fire all in one place?

La Noche

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

Free

Starting at 7:30 pm, The Kimmel Center is holding a free Latin Music & Dance Party! The evening will feature a few Latin Music groups and a DJ to get you moving. Don’t worry if you can’t dance; I’m sure there will be some Salsa and Bachata pros around to teach you a lesson.

Tuesday, 8.14

Night Skies in the Observatory

The Franklin Institute

$10

The Franklin Institute’s Chief Astronomer is hosting an evening of astronomical activities starting at 7 pm. There will be many shows and lessons to choose from, and you can finish your night stargazing at the cash bar on ‘Ben’s Starlight Lounge.’

Classic Essentials: Singin’ in the Rain

Ritz Five

$7 to $10

Come to The Ritz Five at 7 pm to be serenaded by Gene Kelly’s voice and the sweet sounds of his tap dancing feet. With all of the romance, comedy, betrayal, history, and countless musical numbers in this movie, you can’t go wrong. One thing to keep in mind: in Gene’s classic ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ scene, the “rain” pouring down on him is actually half milk.

Wednesday, 8.15

Yoga at the Oval

The Oval

Free

Wind down this Wednesday with an hour of relaxing outdoor yoga. The class starts at 6 pm, and limited mats are available, so bring your own if you can. Afterwards, you can hit up the beer garden or some food trucks and reward your body and mind.

Summer Cocktail Social

Arts Ballroom

$35

From 7 to 10 pm, Drink Philly is hosting an awesome party featuring Philly’s best bartenders. All drinks are included with your ticket purchase! Come meet the people who keep Philadelphia’s mild alcoholism up and running.

Thursday, 8.16

Riverfront ‘Date Night’ Movie

Pennypack on the Delaware

Free

Plan a romantic picnic with your honey accompanied by a free screening of Back to the Future, and a bunch of other people also on romantic picnics with their honeys. The movie will start around 8 pm, and there will be some yard games available for the scenes featuring Bif the big bad bully. Nobody likes that guy.

Friday, 8.17

Clues & Booze & Chews

Cliveden

$30

Come to Cliveden around 6 pm for a boozy scavenger hunt. Put your mind, body, and motor skills to the test as you race to solve riddles and finish drinks. Ticket purchases include two free drinks!

Wine IQ

Pinot Boutique

$29

Starting at 6 pm, Pinot Boutique is ready to teach you everything you need to know to impress your friends when you drink wine together. Learn all the wine buff buzzwords and enhance your palate so you can order that medium body with confidence.

Saturday, 8.18

Drink History

Historic Rittenhouse Town

$20

From 3 to 7 pm, stop by Historic Rittenhouse and raise some money to preserve an important piece of Philadelphia. Ticket purchases get you two free drinks, and there will be games, vendors, music, and more. This is a family and pet friendly event; hopefully someone brings their dog.

Philly Must Love Beards

NOTO Philadelphia

$20

NOTO Philadelphia is hosting one of the weirdest events in the city this Saturday from 3 to 9 pm. If you’re a woman who loves bearded men, purchase your ticket in advance. Men with beards get in for free. It’s basically a huge celebration of beards and the people who love them. Maybe you will meet your bearded prince charming.

Sunday, 8.19

Boozy Brunch Trivia: Disney Edition

Tavern on Broad

$15

You’re going to want to make reservations for this one. Ticket purchases get you bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys with your delicious brunch entree, and Disney Trivia will keep you occupied with five categories of tough questions. The event begins at 11 am, and dressing up is highly encouraged.

Pints Fur Pets

The Field House

$15

What better way to raise money for the Philly Animal Care and Control Team than to drink beer? From 1 to 4 pm, the Field House is hosting a fundraiser featuring players of the Philadelphia Union as their bartenders. Enjoy the drink specials and the company, and complete your weekend with a good deed.
