Philadelphia is an underrated hotbed for art, science, and culture. Home to an array of venues, museums and institutions, there’s really no good excuse to be bored in this city.
Feed Your Curiosity is a weekly roundup of events in Philadelphia that will broaden your horizons, tantalize your mind, and hopefully sophisticate you into something more than the heathen that you are. Here’s what’s going on this week.
The Kimmel Center
This is a free event featuring live Latin dance music. There will also be music in between sets by DJ Kevin Ngo.
The Forrest Theatre
Stop by for a musical rendition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Explore 1930s Georgia as seen through the eyes of disenfranchised African-American women and played by a spellbinding cast of entertainers.
Hailing from St. Louis, Angel Olsen brings a fresh flavor of indie folk/rock to the stage at Union Transfer. White Magic, a psychedelic folk-rock outfit from Brooklyn, brings additional starpower.
Friends of Holmesburg Library
This is a free adult program that instructs you how to make a wreath for the holidays and provides supplies. Space is limited, so make sure you sign up.
Bikers are encouraged to come dressed in costume with seasonal decorations attached to your bike. It’s free to attend but a paid donation will enter you to win a bike raffle.
The Fillmore Philadelphia
Fantasia Barrino of American Idol fame is coming to the Fillmore to spread holiday cheer with jazzy numbers off her album, flaunting a vocal range wider than Chris Christie’s waist.
Most people don’t know this, but there are actually more Wayans brothers than trees in the contiguous United States. Shawn Wayans (aka Wayans brother #21,456) will be performing stand up at the Punch Line venue in Fishtown.
There will be over 100 vendors selling their punk rock wares in the boy’s gym section of the Bok building. Stop by to see just how many things they can put leather and spikes on.
Philadelphia City Institute Free Library
A brass band active in Philadelphia since 2006, the West Philadelphia Orchestra is putting on a holiday concert in the Free Library, presumably with the aim of pissing off librarians. WPO blends Romani Balkan brass, klezmer, jazz and contemporary dance music.
Buzz Cafe Philly
Ten local artists will be offering their handmade goods at this nerdtacular extravaganza honoring the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Expect an abundance of stocking-stuffers for the sci-fi fan on your list.
Independence Visitor Center
A knowledgeable professor will lead you through a guided tour of popular sites in the city whilst imparting lesser known information about murderers, slayings, and all things macabre.
